P.B’s all round in 10 Mile Championship

There were superb personal best performances by a number of Grand Prix athletes recorded in the Club 10 Mile championships in Malahide Castle on Saturday 17th of September.

The race was round 12 of this years series, once again the 10 miler proved to be one of the more popular races on the Grand Prix calendar attracting in excess of 30 athletes.

This was the 42nd consecutive running of the Club 10 Mile Championship race which in latter years has found its home in the picturesque grounds of Malahide Castle, being run over four 2½ mile laps of fairly twisting pathway through the picturesque castle grounds.

David Brennan set his marker down immediately from the off, setting out at a very fast pace clearly David’s intention was to run the legs off the opposition as he tore around the first lap with William Stafford for company however, David’s relentless pace over lap 1 did serious damage as William was dropped. David slowed down slightly on the second lap however again picked up the pace over laps 3 and 4 to take victory and the Ahern Cup in a superb 56:03, a personal best. This guy is like a fine wine getting better with age.

Brendan Buck came through to take 2nd place in a fast 58:46 with William Stafford 3rd on 59:27.

Personal best performances were also recorded by Maurice McCrohan who finished 6th in 61:09 and also Stephen Byrne with 64:49. Indeed Stephen would have been a good minute and a half quicker had he not been hampered by a severe stitch which caused him to stop about ¾ mile from home. Kieran Murphy also recorded a personal best with 66:28.

There was also a notable performance from David Brady with 69:06.

It was good to see the return to racing of flying Dutchman Erwin De Wilde and also “An Sassenach” Eddie Bishop.

Round 13 is the Walker Cup which takes place on Thursday 6th of October at 8.00 p.m. The Walker Cup has always been one of the highlights of the Club racing year and there is usually a good social night afterwards. We hope again to have Frazier Walker in attendance to present the Walker Cup and in addition there will be presentations made for other recent Grand Prix events, in particular the 800M by race sponsor Philip O’Doherty, the 4 Mile Grass Race sponsor Tom Flood and also presentation by Maurice Ahern of the Ahern Cup to David Brennan as the Club 10 Mile Champion. A date to be noted in your diary.
