O`Shea wins Ballyboughal 5 in course record

Sep 16, 2007 [Noel Guiden] The Clonliffe 5 was held once again in the lovely Autumn sunshine of Ballyboughal, North County Dublin yesterday. Bantry AC`s Alan O`Shea continues to sweep all before him with a power packed performance to come home a clear winner in 24:38 taking over a minute off last year`s winning time and in the process claiming the “double your money ” bonus for a new course record on what is a pretty hard 5 miler. Second was Raheny`s Eoin Brady (26:13) with Mick Byrne (Sli Cualain) third in 26:29.

The women`s race provided the day`s drama, as pre race favourite and last year`s winner Deirdre Byrne along with Orla O`Mahony missed the starter`s whistle, (having found themselves locked in the lady`s dressing rooms!) giving the pack at least a 45 second head start but cut their way through the field like a pair of hot knives through North County butter catching all bar Annette Kealy (Raheny) the winner in 29:09.

In the junior classes, strangly enough there was only one entry in the mens section, Sportsworld`s Sean Wall the winner in 32:14 while the junior women`s section was dominated by Ballyboughal GAA with all three prize paying positions from sister`s Niamh and Sinead Arthurs, 1st and 2nd and Ruth Conihan 3rd.There were no junior women from any athletic club running.

Master`s winners included our own David Brennan O/45 in 27:31 and Eugene McCarrick O/55 (32:32) and Jean Carr O/45 (32:51), Paul Cowhig of Civil Service 1st O/40 27:04 and the great Jim McNamara of Donore O/60 33:46.

Overall, however, it must be said that the level of support for the race was very dissapointing with only 108 starters, slightly up on last year, but with the hard work and effort put in by the organizors and officials on the day the future of this particular race is open to question.

Clonliffe thank those who did support The Clonliffe 5: Ballyboughal GAA club, Clonliffe`s hard working officials, our sponsors Behan and Associates and Fightlord, and of course the athletes who made the trip.
