Spring is here! Juvenile Spring Series

Clonliffe are delighted to announce details of the Juvenile spring series. This years Spring Series has been expanded to include the following clubs: Clonliffe Harriers A.C., Skerries A.C., Lusk A.C., Portmarknock A.C. and Celtic A.C.

The series is for athletes from U/8 to U/16 and will be held over three rounds at 3 different venues including in the now world famous Skerries Beach Race.

The dates and venues are as follows:

Sunday March 30th (11 a.m.) – Morton Stadium Santry hosted by Clonliffe Harriers.

Sunday April 6th – Skerries Beach Races – hosted by Skerries A.C. (10.30 a.m.).

Sunday April 27th (11 a.m.) – to be hosted by Portmarknock A.C. – venue to be confirmed.

In recent years this series has proved to be very successful particularly at introducing some of the younger athletes to competition in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. The idea is that the whole event starts on time, one race runs immediately after conclusion of the previous one and that it is a short snappy Meet concluded within an hour.

Round 1 hosted by Clonliffe will be on the track in the Morton Stadium and the race distances are as follows:

U/8s – 300m

U/10 – 500m

U/12 – 600m

U/14 – 800m

U/16 – 1000m

Seperate races for boys & girls when possible

Clonliffe Harriers look forward to welcoming our friends from Skerries A.C., Celtic A.C., Lusk A.C. and Portmarknock A.C. to the Morton Stadium on March 30th.

Round up: Intermediates, Masters, Road Races, Indoor

The weekend round up starts with the National Intermediate and Masters cross country in Cow Park, Dunboyne yesterday. The women`s team were lead home by Bernadette Kiernan who had a fine run to finish 16th, a measure of how far Bernadette has progressed in such a short period of time is the fact that only a year or so ago Bernadette was new to the sport and competing in the meet and train league. With Jacqui Dunphy 33rd, Maura Matthews 37th, Caoimhe Cruise 49th, Emma Harding 54th and Aisling Andrews 62nd the team placed 8th overall.

The Intermediate men were hit by numerous withdrawals and failed to field a team: David Brady was 40th, Niall Sherlock 51st and Johnny Bradley 53rd.

In the Masters the team placed 19th: Ciaran McCarthy 30th, Clive Ahern 89th, Hans De Raymeaker 139th and Alan Worrall 221st.

On the road race front Kerri Page was 51st in the Kilconeiron 5 Mile in 37.58 and new member Rachael Wisdom had a great run in the Wicklow Hospice Half Marathon in Avondale, Rathdrum on Saturday placing 2nd in 1.30.49.

Finally on the Indoor circuit Ciara McCallion recorded another fast 400 in Athlone at Saturday`s Indoor League winning in 55.77.

Clonliffe at Latvian Indoor Championships

Three Clonliffe athletics were in action at the Latvian Indoor Championships over the weekend. Dmitrijs Serjogins, who is now living back home in Latvia won the 1500m in 3.57. Edgars Sumskis who is still recovering from illness and not yet 100% fit also ran in that 1500 recording a time of 4.06. Kristaps Valters who was second in last year`s Latvian Indoor 1500 was once again in the silver medal position but this time in his favoured 800 (1.53).

Lauren Carr motors to Dublin 800 win

Some outstanding runs from the Clonliffe Juvenile middle distance athletes at the final day of the Dublin Juvenile Indoor Championships held at a wind swept Morton Stadium. The wind down the home straight could have skint a cat making for pretty hard race conditions running head on into a constant head wind. All the Clonliffe crew put in great efforts in their finals. Star of the day was Lauren Carr who took her biggest win todate winning the Dublin U/15 Indoor 800 title.

Cliona, Lauren, Hannah

Lauren from the starts gun settle in the second place and put in a really strong effort off the final bend into the “skin a cat” wind to drive into the lead and hold off her challenger to take a well deserved win in 2.37.4. Lauren had company in this race of two of her training partners Cliona Cooley and Hannah Browne both of whom ran very well indeed with Hannah coming in 4th and Cliona 9th, had there been a team prize….

Aoife Hession

The club`s other medal today came from young Aoife Hession who came off the final bend in the U/12 600 like a train to move from 4th to 3rd and within touching distance of 2nd. An excellent bronze for Aoife.

Of the other Clonliffe finalists all performed with exceptional fighting spirit. Ella Brown was 5th in the U/13 600. Cillian Forrester 8th in the boys U/13 600 and in the U/14`s Amy Warren was 6th in the 800 and Ben Guiden 9th in the boys 800.

So a satisfying Dublin indoors for the Black `n`Amber: 3 Gold, 7 Silver, 5 Bronze and 10 other Finalists.

Jasmin Hales adds Dublin 400 bronze to her collection

The Dublin Juvenile Indoors moved to Tallaght for today`s 4th day of the championships. The menu today consisted of the 400s for the older ages groups plus relays. Jasmin Hales had a very good run in the U/18 girls 400 to place 3rd and add bronze to the 200 silver she collected last weekend. Kate Hession placed 6th in the same final.

The club`s younger athletes where in relay action, most of the older age groups being heavily committed to cross country having to give today a miss. There was a great turn out of  young Harriers with teams in virtually all races putting in very strong performances. Great runs from the U/11 boys to take silver and from the U/10s to take bronze. The U/13 girls battled through heats and semis to get to their final and placed a fighting 5th. 5th place also for the U/14 girls and 7th for the U/14 boys in their finals. The U/15 girls where just out of the medals in 4th place only inches off 3rd. Well done to all.

Tomorrow it`s back to Santry for the final day, finals for 500m to 800m, plus field events is the order of the day from 12.30.

Men`s Intermediate and Masters teams for Sunday`s Nationals

The intermediate men`s team for Sunday`s Nationals in Dunboyne has been badly hit by withdrawals through injury and unavailability as a result of indoor races and next week`s national senior. Still the Captain has been in a position to put out a team that will give a very good account and won`t be found wanting through a lack of guts and determination.

Included and in his first race for Clonliffe is Anthony Flannery, a recent winner of the Cloonacool 5k road race in county Sligo. Another athlete will will go well is Dave Brady and the always dependable Johnny Bradley.

The intermediate team is: Anthony Flannery, Dave Brady, Johnny Bradley, Niall Sherlock, Conor Keane and Sean McHale.

Kiernan to lead Clonliffe in National Intermediates

The Kiernan name once again features strongly in a Clonliffe cross country team, although this time it`s Bernadette. One of the club`s most improved athletes Bernadette Kiernan on Sunday leads the ladies team into battle in Dunboyne on Sunday for the National Intermediate.

The Intermediate women placed 3rd in the Dublins where Bernadette had a fine run to finish 7th. Bernadette will lead the team on Sunday. The full team is: Bernadette Kiernan, Emma Harding, Maura Matthews, Jacqui Dunphy, Caoimhe Cruise, Alison O’Sullivan, Joyce O’Hare and Aisling Andrews.

The men`s team are Dublin Intermediate champions, however, as a number of the athletes who competed that day in Tymon Park are unavailable having turned their attentions to the indoor season a weakened team will line up on Sunday.
