Club championships an outstanding success

Jun 9, 2008 [N. Guiden] Great credit goes to Joe and Gladys Cooper and their teams for organising what once again has proved to be the highlight of the Clonliffe club year to date with an outstanding club championship yesterday. The day once again reflected the spectrum of athletics in the club with club championship for Juveniles, Seniors and Masters. The highlight of the Senior Championship was once again the 800 metres which was a cracking event won in style by Colm Rooney in 1:51.29.

In perfect weather proceedings got underway at 4.00 p.m. sharp with the tiny tots races. Things moved quickly on through the juvenile programme from U/10 to U/ 16 with some terrific performances by our young athletes in the sprint events and then onto the distance events which ran from 300 metres for the U/10s up to 1000 metres for the U/16s. Noteworthy performances in these events came from young Keith Hodson in the Boys U/10s with a 60 and 300 metres double and in the girls under 10s from Amy O’Donoghue with a 60 and 300 metres double whilst in the U/16 distance races over 1000 metres there were wins for Ian Guiden and Laura Brennan.

In the Senior Championships proceedings commenced with the 100 metres which was won by Patrick O’Connor in 11.84 from Anthony McCreery just returning from injury 11.86 with Sean Lacey 3rd in 12.25.

There was a notable double in the Women’s Championship from Louise Reilly in the 800 and 1500 metres.

Larry Brady had an excellent run in the 3000 metres championship taking a massive 20 seconds off his PB running 9:08.11 from Jordan Logan 2nd 9:45.23 and Joseph Cooper 10:04.9. Mark McKenzie in 4th place 10:06.86 also ran a PB.

The highlight of the Senior Championships was once again the 800 metres. The field went through the lap in 54 seconds, with 300 to go Conor Healy led, Conor kicked again going into the top bend and at this stage it looked like he had made the winning move, however, Rooney was not to be denied as he stormed past Healy down the home straight to win in a fast 1:51.29, Conor Healy recorded 1:52.07 for 2nd with Aidan Bailey 3rd in 1:52.6. David Fitzmaurice recorded a PB dipping under 2 minutes for the first time in running 1:59.12.

In the Masters 3000 there was a good tactical battle between Gerry McCabe, Noel Guiden and Alan Worrall, with 700 to go Guiden made what he thought was a winning move hitting the front for the first time and opening a gap of a couple of yards over McCabe, however, at precisely the same spot one lap later McCabe stormed past opening a gap which got wider as the finishing line approached. Gerry McCabe won in 10:33.12 from Noel Guiden 10:41.23 with Alan Worrall 3rd 11:01.75.

There was a great atmosphere throughout the course of the day with club members young and old out supporting their club-mates. It was wonderful as well to see so many Clonliffe people in attendance and to see so many parents of the juvenile athletes stay for the duration of the championships. A special word also to our gourmet chef Eoin Pearse ably assisted by comis chefs Christine Hanley and Pamela Cooper for an outstanding job slaving away over the hot barbecue. A word also for DJ Joe for the music which added greatly to the atmosphere and the enjoyment of the championships.
