Grand Prix Series: McCarrick Plate May 17th

The 4th race in the Grand Prix series (2.5 mile), took place last Thursday, 17th May. Another large number of athletes turned out to compete in the McCarrick plate. Unfortunately, Eugene was unavailable on the night to present the prizes to the worthy winners. Our thanks to Eugene for his continued sponsorship and support of this race.

It was a staggered start, an open handicap with the slower athletes going off first, so all the athletes know what they have to do to win. The winner in the Grand prix was Claude McMenamon, followed by Ernie Ramsey and Bernie Byrne. First over the line on the night was a guest of the grand prix Alan O’Mahoney, and as a guest, not able to compete for the McCarrick plate.

Thanks to the officials on the night, as the athletes all finished closely together, it made it a difficult job to take names and times. If you ran and do not appear on the results, please advise Eoin Murray or a member of the Grand Prix Committee.

The race result, overall leaderboard, the fastest athlete and the team competition are also on the site. Note that only 8 races of the 12 count, so plenty of time to score points. The ever improving Darren Reilly is winning both the overall leaderboard and the fastest athlete. He has 4 wins from 4 in the fastest athlete competition.

The next race is Thursday 31st May, in Malahide again at 8.00. The Michael Murphy Memorial Race has been running now for over twenty-five  years. The race was first run in the grounds of Malahide Castle back in 1980, the fastest time recorded that day was by Michael Murphy in a time of just over twenty-four minutes, tragically later that year, Michael was killed in a road traffic accident in the United States and the following year the race was run in his memory. Michael’s family donated the cup and have almost every year been in attendance on the race night to present their prize to the fastest man. The race is one of the highlights of the club year and is one of the feature races in the Grand Prix series

The presentation will take place in Malahide cricket club after the race, we would ask that all athletes attend the presentation as courtesy to the Murphy family. The cricket club are also generously allowing us to use their facilites, showers, the bar etc on the night.
