Best ever Irish performance 6th at Euro teams

Some great performances from Irish athletes at Day 1 of the European League 1 Team Championships yesterday (Saturday) in Heraklion, Greece including a very solid 4th place from Clonliffe`s Brian Gregan. Gregan place 4th in 46.87, chipping in valuable points resulting in the Irish team ending the day in an unexpected 5th place.

Tomorrow will see Ian Rogers in the pole vault, Ciara McCallion in the 4 x 400 and Gregan also in the 4 x 400.

Also today 4 x 100 squad member, Keith Pike ran a strong leg in the relay on the Irish team as the team clocked a new national U/23 record of 40.18 in placing 3rd, later he ranĀ 10.94 in placing 4th in the B 100.

Sunday, Day 2 saw the Irish team again put in excellent performances including a 10th place by Ian Rogers in the Pole Vault (4.50m) and then Clonliffe athletes in the 4 x 400 relays, Ciara McCallion running the 2nd leg as the women`s team placed 6th (3.43.10) and Brian Gregan running the opening leg for the men who finished 3rd (3.05.64).

At the end of two tough days the team finished in a best ever position at these Championships, a very solid 6th ahead of countries such as Turkey, Switzerland and Romania to name but three. Congratulations to the whole team. Full report on www.athleticsireland.ie
