Cake races 2011

The final event of Clonliffe`s 125 was the annual club Christmas Cake Race held in Santry last night. The race continues to attract a good turn out of the club`s athletes on what is one of the social highlights of the year, the turnout last night was about 50 “athletes” . It was a mild evening with a strongish head wind, the race starting on the track heading into Northwood and the doubling back on itself to finish back on the track. As always a staggered start was the order of the day. And as always there was some questionable handicapping!! First home in the ladies race was young Roisin Leahy a popular winner and an equally popular winner of the men`s race was Mark McDonald.

Leinster Star award for Clonliffe junior

Dec 22, 2011 [Noel Guiden] Congratulations to Ian Guiden on being the recipient of this year`s Award for Best Male Juvenile in Dublin from Athletes Leinster. Ian will be presented with the Award at the Leinster Star Awards in the Seven Oaks Hotel, Carlow on January 7th.

What a cracker!

Dec 19, 2011 [Noel Guiden ] The inaugural Clonliffe Christmas Cracker 5 k proved to be an outstanding success on a beautiful but frosty Sunday morning in the Morton Stadium. There was a fine Christmas atmosphere with festive music playing over the PA system, the mondo track covered with frost which glittered in the early morning winter sunshine and young Clonliffe Harriers ‘helping out’ by pirouetting on a makeshift ice-skating rink! The race director on the advice of the Health and Safety Officer made the difficult but only decision possible in the circumstances to the effect that the track surface was simply too slippery and dangerous to start the race on, thus the race started on the in field section completing a lap of the football pitch before crossing the track and heading into Santry. There was a total entry of the best part of 300 athletes but with driving conditions difficult in some parts of Dublin some 220 odd were on the start-line for this unique race starting and finishing in the Morton Stadium.

The race was started by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Andrew Montague. As the athletes headed into the general Santry area they were already well strung out as they disappeared up the hill towards Northwood. Some twelve minutes later the lead car reappeared making the turn at Santry Avenue with the lead pair of Joe Warne of Doheny A.C. and Emmett Dunleavy (Sligo A.C.) together as they made a turn into the stadium for the 400 metre lap on the track, this pair were chased in by Clonilffe’s Conor Healy. Warne and Dunleavy battle it out down the home straight with Warne getting his nose in front to take the inaugural Christmas Cracker 5k in a time of 14.43 with Dunleavy only a second in arrears. An excellent run also by Conor Healy in 3rd place in a time of 14.55. The top six were completed by Alan McCormack DSD 4th, Kieran Doherty (Letterkenny) 5th and Pat Byrne (Tinryland A.C.) 6th. Sarah Treacy was a most welcome participant in the race having competed for Ireland in the European Cross Country in Slovenia the previous week. The National Inter-county champion was a worthy winner finishing in a time of 16.06, a superb 14th place overall, and some 24 seconds ahead of Deirdre Byrne of Sli Cualann with Skerries A.C.’s Ciara Durkan making up the top three.

First of the juniors was Eoin Taggart (Greystones and District A.C.) an excellent 9th overall in a time of 15.49. First junior woman was Clonliffe’s Lauren Begley. First of the master runners was Declan Power (Clonilffe) 7th overall and first of the master women was Maura Matthews also of Clonliffe.

Towards the end of the field a little bit of history was taking place as Billy Morton’s granddaughter finished becoming the first member of the Morton family to run in the stadium for over 40 years, watched by her mother and Billy’s daughter Yvonne.

Post race the winners received their prizes from the Lord Mayor Andrew Montague and Clonliffe President Paddy Marley. There was also the draw for three superb prizes courtesy of ERP Recycling the prizes being presented by Fergal Murray.

In all an excellent return of road racing to Santry and a race to be put into your diary for next year, Sunday December 16th 2012.

Clonliffe Harriers would like to thank all the runners who took part in this inaugural event, the Lord Mayor for his time, An Garda Siochana who provided invaluable assistance, our partners in the event ERP, the Last Lap café, all our other sponsors, the race director Tom Griffin and his hard working team and all the members of the club who turned out on the day to help with the smooth running of the event.

Results of Christmas Cracker 5k

Dec 18, 2011 [Noel Guiden] This morning`s first Clonliffe Harriers Christmas Cracker 5k road races took place on a fresh frosty morning that certainly got rid of the cob webs. A festive Morton Stadium greeted the runners with Christmas music over the air waves. Health and safety dictated that the race started on the grass of the infield before heading out into the Santry morning, however, the track was clear for the arrival of the athletes some 15 minutes later so all 200 plus starters could enjoy the finish on the track of the famed stadium. Joe Warne and Emmett Dunleavy entered the stadium together and battles over the final 400 with Warne the victor in a fast 14.43. Full results:

Clonliffe awards night 2011

Dec 2, 2011 [Noel Guiden ] There was big crowd in attendance in the Clonliffe clubhouse for last nights second annual Clonliffe athletes of the year awards night for what almost turned out to be the Brian Gregan awards night! Before the presentation night proper commenced there was an impromptu presentation held in the club when young Adam O’Brien was presented with his U/14 National Inter-county gold medal which was won in the mud in Sligo last weekend, by coach Mick Fogarty with Adam’s training group providing a hearty round of applause. This is the first of hopefully many national medals that`ll be won by this great group of Clonliffe athletes over the years to come.

The athletes of the year presentation proceeded in the club bar, the club president Paddy Marley in his speech commending the excellent performances by the club’s athletes throughout this historic 125th year and commending the athletes and their coaches for their dedication. He also congratulated David Flynn and Dave Fitzmaurice on their selection for the Irish U/23 European Cross Country on Sunday week. Paddy then made presentations to the Clonliffe athletes who had set new club records in 2011. A presentation was made to Tomas Rauktys who set a new shot putt record at the Dublin Graded Meet in Irishtown of 16.83m. Brian Gregan was then on the floor, Brian having set a new club 200 metre record, not once, but twice on the 6th of August in the Nationals, Brian ran 21.36 in the semi and then 21.09 in the final. Brian remained on the floor for the 400 metre club record presentation, Brian set a new club record on three occasions in the summer months, firstly at the European U/23 Games when he ran 46.12, then on the 17th of August at the World Student Games in China he ran 46.00 in the semi-final and in the final went sub 46 running 45.96.

Although not in attendance recognition was made of the club records set by Matt Field (on two occasions) in the 110 h of 14.81 and then 14.77 on the 2nd of July. Alistair Cragg also received recognition as a result of setting a new club and National Irish record of 13.03.53 in Brussels on the 16th of September last.

Presentations were then made to the Clonliffe 2011 Individual National Champions: Brian Gregan 400 m indoor champion, Tomas Rauktys, National Discus Champion and, to a great round of applause, Mark Kenneally, Olympic Qualifier in the marathon, the national 10000 m champion. Clonliffe’s other two national champions were David Donegan, pole vault indoor and outdoor and Alistair Cragg 5000 m champion.

The nominees were then read out in respect of the various club athletes of the year, club captain Joe Cooper opened the all important envelope revealing the winners who were presented with their cups as follows:

Junior athlete of the year: Patrick O’Connor

Master athlete of the year: Phillip O’Doherty

Women’s Track and Field athlete of the year: Ciara McCallion

Men’s Track and Field athlete of the year: Brian Gregan

Women’s Cross Country/Road athlete of the year: Ailish Malone

Men’s Cross Country/Road athlete of the year: Mark Kenneally

The culmination of the athlete of the year awards was the announcement of the Clonliffe Harrier of the year by Joe Cooper. This year’s recipient was a lady who epitomised what it is to be a Clonliffe Harrier on that never to be forgotten day in Tullamore on the 20th of August in the National League Final, normally a 200 m specialist she rallied to the cause scoring valuable points in the 1500m walk, the long jump, triple jump and ran a leg of the 4 x 100 m. The 2011 Clonliffe Harrier of the year Snezana Bectina.

Bectina looked totally shocked as her name was called out to great cheers from her clubmates.

To round off the proceedings a special presentation was then made to Brian Gregan as a momento of his winning of a magnificent silver medal at the European U/23 championships.

In all an excellent occasion as we come towards the end of our 125th year with only two events now left on the cards: the Clonliffe Harriers Christmas Cracker 5 k on December 18th and the Cake Race on December 22nd.

A special thank you from all to John Shields and Loki Sports for their very generous sponsorship of the Clonliffe athlete of the year awards and also to Caroline Tuite for the tea, coffee, biscuits and home-made (or so she says) fruitcake.
