Highlight of the weekend`s Irish Universities Track and Field Championships held at the Mardyke, Cork was brillant double gold from Becky Woods (TCD). Becky took the 1500m title in 4.43.07 and the 3,000sc in 11.23.40. Ian Rogers (DIT) also took a versities title winning the men`s pole vault with a best of 4.40m. Jamie Rossiter (UCD) was 2nd in the 3,000sc (9.42.90) , Caoimhe Morris (IT Balanchardstown) was 2nd in the hammer (39.29) and Sarah Doyle (UCD) 2nd in the 100H (16.44). Bronze medals were won by Snezana Bechtina (DIT) in the 400 (59.82) and Andrew Jenkinson 800m (1.58.58). Other good performances by Clonliffe athletes included Paul Whelan in the 100m, qualifying for the final where he placed 7th in 11.23 after recording times of 11.40 in the heat and 11.25 in the semi final, Mark McDonald placing 6th in the 1500m final (4.06.0) after a qualifying time in the heat of 4.04.58, Michelle English (DCU) 11th in the 1500m in 5.04.97 and Snezana Bechtina (again) 7th in the 200m in 27.88 after running 26.77 in the semi.
