Blast from the Past: Langan wins McDonald Cup

Eoin Murray reports: The fourth race in the 2013 Grand Prix series took place last night on the track. Thankfully the rain held off and the cold blustery weather did not deter the 35 hardy athletes who toed the line for the 5 mile race.

The first kilometre was fairly pedestrian with no-one prepared to take it up as the front few jostled for the best position sheltered from the wind. From there, Conor Keane decided enough was enough and hit the front and was not to be caught, to win in 22.13. Conor running his third race in 6 days having finished second in the Malahide 5k parkrun last Saturday in 16.30 and 5th in the BHAA ESB race on Tuesday. Tom Sherlock, no stranger himself to plenty of races in a few days was second just in front of Joe Phipps with Sean Doran just behind in 4th.

The winner in the handicap was a new member to the series John Langan with Shay Byrne in second place and Paddy Tuite in third.

The presentation took place in the club bar afterwards with some welcome hot teas and coffees with the usual spread of biscuits and cake. Thanks to Gerry Deegan (home from California, a Clonliffe Harrier since 1980 and currently a coach in Griffith Park sports and A Runners Circle) for donating 5 technical t shirts for the first 5 finishers over the line. Next race in the series is on the 23rd May, the McCarrick plate over 2.5 miles in Malahide.
