Sep 27, 2008 [Noel Guiden] The 43rd running of the Walker Cup took place in the Morton Stadium on Thursday night, round 10 of the 2008 Grand Prix Series. There was a good turn out for this one of the Grand Prix highlights and despite the best efforts of traffic Fraizer Walker as always made it to the stadium on time. In semi darkness,(the stadiums training lights aren`t the best) the field was sent on their 16 and a bit lap journey at 8.00pm on the button.
The pre race favourites gathered at the head of the race from the first bend : Philip O`Doherty, David Dunwoody, Tom Monks. Also sitting there and looking very comfortable was the guy improving by the race The Donegal Express Ernie Ramsey. These four pulled away, however, at just over half way Ernie upped the pace and in a matter of a lap had opened a lead of 20 meters which grew steadly and by lap 16 his lead had grown to a massive 200m.
Ernie came home first a most impressive winner, even impressing fellow Donegal Native Paddy Marley, in a time of 22.27. Second was Philip O`Doherty with Dave Dunwoody third.
Slightly further back the battle of the race was also the battle of the Pauls, Messrs. Carolan and Kelly (another new boy) and after an excellent race long battle Paul Kelly took Paul Carolan by a fraction on the line.
Richard Connolly looking more like his old self had a good race and is now showing a return to his form of yesteryear. Speaking of yesteryear young Pat Bonass had one of his best runs of the last couple of years running steadly to his pre planned pace and his reward was a stunning victory over the handicapper to run away with the Walker Cup!
The top 3 in the handicap were: 1. Pat Bonass, 2. Ernie Ramsey, 3. Tom Monks.
Afterwards, at the presentation Paddy Marley paid tribute to Fraizer Walker for his long running committment to Clonliffe Harriers before Fraizer took to the floor to present his prizes to the Winners.
Paul Carolan takes over the Grand Prix Series leader`s Yellow Jersey for round 11, The Irwin Cup on Saturday October 11th.
Many thanks to Fraizer Walker and to the night`s race officials. Full results soon.
