Good luck to Clonliffe trio in Euros

Clonliffe will have representation on all three Irish men’s teams in Tilburg for Sundays European Cross Country. Sean O”Leary goes in the junior race, Cathal Doyle in the U/23 and seasoned campaigner Stephen  Scullion in the senior race.

Good luck to all the Irish athletes racing. The championships will be televised on RTE and livestreamed through European Athletics.

Clonliffe athletes selected for Euro Cross

Many congratulations to Cathal Doyle on his selection for the Irish U/23 team and Sean O’Leary on his selection for the junior team for the European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg in two weeks time. Athletics Ireland have also announced the selection of Stephen Scullion on the senior team. Nil desperandum.

Greta wins European Championship

Greta Streimikyte is the European 1500 (T13) Champion! At last night`s World Para European Championships in Berlin Greta won the 1500 in a time of 4.48.54 to win by a margin of over 10 seconds. This was Greta`s first global gold medal having taken bronze back at these championships in 2016 and later that summer  was 4th in the Paralympic Games in Rio.

Valdas 20th in Europe, Ireland 6th

Clonliffe`s Valdas Dopolskas running for Lithuania had a fine run indeed in this morning`s European Marathon in Berlin. Valdas was 20th in 2.18.58. Sergiu Ciobanu will be somewhat disappointed with his run finishing 36th in 2.19.49.

Other Irish: Kevin Seaward 15th (2.16.58), Mick Clohisey 18th (2.18.00), Sean Hehir 25th (2.18.58), Paul Pollock 47th (2.23.26). Race winner was Koen Naert (BEL) in a championship record of 2.09.51. In the team result Ireland placed 6th with Italy taking gold.

Tough day at office for Scullion

Clonliffe’s Stephen Scullion had it tough in Berlin tonight in the European Championships 10,000. In very hot conditions the Belfast man was always at the rear of proceedings and finished in 23rd place in 29.46.87. This placing  exceeded his ranking.

First Clonliffe athlete in action at the European Championships in Berlin is Stephen Scullion in the 10000 tomorrow evening at 7.20pm (GMT).

On Friday the men’s 4 x 400 heats, the squad includes Dara Kervick, at 12.50pm.

Then Sunday will see two more Clonliffe men enter the fray at 9.00am in the marathon with Sergiu Ciobanu for Ireland and Valdas Dopolskas for Lithuania.

Clonliffe athletes selected for Europeans

Athletics Ireland this morning announced the Irish team for the European track and field championships in Berlin. Stephen Scullion has been selected in the 10000, Sergiu Ciobanu in the marathon and Dara Kervick in the 4 x 400 relay. See full team on

Scullion hits European 10,000 Qualifying Time

News from the US overnight of Stephen Scullion hitting the European Championships qualifying time in the 10,000 at Portland, Oregon. Scullion took all of 22 seconds off his pb in placing 5th in 28.36.05. On his Twitter account the Clonliffe man said: ” Did enough to hit the European Qualifying Champs qualifying time and no more..”.

Stephen has already bagged one of the European Marathon spots for Berlin, along with fellow Harrier Sergiu Ciobanu.

Scullion and Sergiu for European Cup

Clonliffe distance athletes Stephen Scullion and Sergiu Ciobanu have been selected to run on the Irish team of four, along with Mick Clohesey (Raheny) and Hugh Armstrong  (Ballina) for the European 10,000 cup. That race takes place in London in conjuntion with the Highgate Harriers Night of PBs on May 19th.

Clonliffe Marathon Men for European Champs

Both Sergiu Ciobanu and Stephen Scullion have been selected to run for Ireland in August`s European Championships in Berlin. Sergiu clocked the qualifying time in November in the Valencia Marathon while Stephen`s excellent 12th place in last Sunday`s London Marathon in 2.15.55 secured his place. The two Clonliffe marathon men will be joined on the Berlin start line by a 3rd Clonliffe Harriers with newly minted Clonliffe Harrier, and Rio Olympian,  Valdas Dopolskas, selected to run for Lithuania.
