Jan 27, 2010 [Noel Guiden] Clonliffe athletes performed very well in this afternoon`s DCU School`s Invitation in St. Claires with three top three finishes provided by Liam Ashton, Ian Guiden and Jamie Rossister and a host of other top class efforts.
First Harrier in action was Laura Preston (Maryfield) placing 35th in the junior girls race over 1500m with a solid run. In the junior boys 2,000m race Liam Ashton ran very well indeed moving nicely through the field early race, and on the final lap getting into the pack fighting for third place, and then outkicking his nearest challenger to take an excellent third place and lead St. Aidans to team silver.
As always Laura Brennan ran a hard and honest race looking very strong in the Inter girls 2,000m and was particularily strong over the final lap picking up several places to finish 9th. In the Inter boys 3,000m race Ian Guiden continued his good form of late with a very positive race running very nicely to take third place and with Conor King (40th) took team gold for St. Aidans. Very good runs in this race also from Ronan Doyle (Coliste Choilm) in 15th place and from Owen McCullogh (Belvedere) 19th.
The final race of the day was the senior boys race where Jamie Rossister running for Belvedere finshed with great speed after a tough race to finish second. Having a very good run today was Mark McKenzie, who recovered well from an early fall, and took several places over the latter part of the race to finish 9th with Jordan Logue 11th and Graham Mahon, finding conditions today much more to his liking than Saturday`s Antrim mud, 12th and Johnny Ward 23rd. St. Aidans took 2nd team and best overall school.
In all very good stuff from our athletes many of whom will have had Saturday`s Antrim race still in their legs. No rest for the wicked however with the North Leinsters moved forward to next Tuesday at the same venue.
