Clonliffe Coach Ronan Mulveny shows how it’s done

Clonliffe juvenile coach, Ronan Mulveny, in his comeback race performed superbly in the Walker Cup 4 Mile track race held on Thursday the 6th of October to claim victory in this prestigious event. This was indeed an auspicious occasion being the 40th running of the Walker Cup which was donated to the club in 1966 by the Walker family who were once again represented by Frazier Walker and again Frazier was the race sponsor. This was also round 13 in the 2005 Grand Prix series.

Once again the Walker Cup was held in ideal weather conditions on an exceptionally mild early October night with an entry of 24 athletes.

The pick of the crop was undoubtedly Michael McDiarmiada who hit the front from the start and literally ran away from the rest of the field.

Once again David Brennan was the fastest grand prix man running another superb race – his training companions can only look and wonder. Also in this lead bunch were Tom Monks, Tom Griffin, Martin Tracey and William Stafford.

A second group comprising of Philip O’Doherty, Ronan Mulveny and Maurice McCrohan were in pursuit, followed by another group made up of Robert Cleary, Noel Guiden, Stephen Byrne and Colm Doran.

Michael McDiarmiada continued his relentless pace and began to pull away as the chasing pack fragmented with Michael taking victory in a fast 21:20 from David Brennan in a sub 22 minute performance of 21:58. Martin Tracey recorded a time of 22:22 which was faster than the time he recorded in his first Walker Cup outing way back in 1978. Tom Monks is starting to show a return to form finishing in 22:46 in 4th place.

Further back Maurice McCrohan got the better of Ronan Mulveny and Philip O’Doherty, whilst Stephen Byrne continued his superb form of late to take 10th place in 24:09.

Maurice Ahern running his last Clonliffe Club race as Club President was satisfied with his 31:41 and now with additional time on his hands to take in more serious training has other targets firmly in mind.
