Clonliffe masters shine in Nenagh at National indoors

There were golden performances by Clonliffe Master athletes at the National Masters Indoor Championships held in Nenagh on Sunday last January 15th. The athletes bringing home a magnificent haul of eight medals including five golds.

There was a notable performance by Phillip O’Doherty in particular in the V4 category as the Clonliffe Master Athlete of the year took a personal haul of two gold and one bronze. Phillip, a noted 800 metre runner retained his 800 metre indoor gold in an impressive 2.16.61. Phillip went down in distance to the 400 metres where again he prevailed taking gold in a time of 62.31 and to finish off a memorable day he took bronze in the 1500m in 4.44.94.

There was also an eye-catching performance by new Clonliffe Harrier Bernie Byrne. Bernie is a recent convert, indeed she is only a member of Clonliffe for some three or four months and she scored a notable middle distance double under the watchful eye of her coach Pat Healy, taking V3 800 gold in 2.33.28 and then following this up with 1500 gold in 5.32.5.

Our third golden performance of the day came courtesy of the evergreen George Maybury. After a long frustrating period of injury George is now well and truly back in harness taking an excellent V5 800 metre gold in a time of 2.30.55. George also doubled up in the 1500 metres where he took silver in a time of 5.21.00. This 1500 metre V5 class was an excellent race from a Clonliffe perspective as George was chased all the way home by Derek Reilly as Derek took a well deserved National bronze medal in a time of 5.23.77. Eugene McCarrick was just out of the medals in the 1500 V6 finishing 4th in 5.34.99.
