Clonliffe thunder into Premier League finals

It was a day that had all in the Morton Stadium yesterday for the preliminary round of the national track and field league: sunshine, thunder and lightning stopping “play” for about 30 minutes, the breaking of a 35-year-old club record, PB’s and at the end passage to the Premier league final in Tullamore for both teams.

The Clonliffe’s women’s team came into the round with the goal of qualifying for the Premier finals, that objective was achieved pretty comfortably in the end, as a result of some outstanding performances, the team taking 4th place with the top 8 qualifying. Highlights of the day included a first-place in the 400 by Leah Bergin in another fast time, 55.21, within a fraction of her PB. Laura Tuite ran a 9 second PB for 2nd place in the 3000 (10.21.08), the relay teams also excelled, the 4 x 400 team of Anna Heavey, Clodagh Dunbar, Leah Bergin and Snezana Bechtina took 2nd in 3.53.77 and a very young 4 x 100 team of Emily Jachna, Molly Haslam, Rebecca Walsh and Ava Usanova were 2nd in their heat in a time of 51.09.

With a team’s best 15 results only counting the team finished 4th on 202 points, the qualification was topped by DSD on 237, Ratoath 235, Raheny 226.5.

The men’s team are the defending champions and did a thoroughly professional job in qualifying for the Premier league final. The day got off to a superb start as Simon Galligan in the hammer beat James Russell’s 1988 club record of 63.05 with a monster throw of 63.52 and bagged maximum points, Simon also took 3rd place in the WFD with a 5.38 effort. Other notable performances included a massive 30 plus second PB in the 5000 by Stephen Cashin of 14.55.00 also to take maximum points. Eoin Sheridan contributed winning performances in both the discus, 49.65 and the shot (14.40). Leo Morgan took the win in the 100 (10.79) and the 4 x 100 relay team of Leo, Keith Pike, Craig Duffy and Chris Sibanda also secured maximum points (41.73), and PBs for both Sean Carrigg and Niall Carbery.

At the end of a long day the men’s team finished on top 258.5 points, 2nd Leevale 238, 3rd Nenagh Olympic 220
