Club C’ship wins for Lauren, Niamh and Niall (updated with pics)

It was a very pleasant evening indeed in Morton Stadium for the 2nd night of the Clonliffe club Championships 2024. Once again there was some fine racing from the club’s athletes in what was a thoroughly enjoyable night.

Lauren Carr made it a club sprints double adding the 200 title to the 100 that she took this day last week. Lauren taking the win tonight in an impressive 25.3. 2nd was guest Rebecca Ward 26.1, 3rd and 2nd in the club championship was Snezana Bechtina (26.5) and in 3rd place in the championship, Rebecca Walsh (26.8)

The women’s 1500 championship featured a great 3 way battle between Niamh Kelly, Sarah Bateson and Julie Larkin, all of whom had ran so admirably in Belfast on Saturday. On the final lap Niamh broke away to be crowned 2024 club champion in a time of 4.46, Sarah chased all the way to line closing in clocking 4.47 with Julie running a new PB, bettering her time of Saturday, of 4.53. At 3 way battle had also developed for 4th position where Clodagh Galvin prevailed.

The men’s 1500 was split into 2 races, again there was a 3 way battle for honours, and it was an even tighter affair than the women’s race. Niall Carbery was strongest down the home straight to win in 4.11.9, next was Abdi Ali Moaw (4.12.15) and Cathal McHale (4.12.68), it was as tight as that! From the chasing pack Sean Doran got the better of the rest of the field coming home in 4th place (4.22.09).

Not quite Joey & Chandler, but Friends just the same!

The B race featured the finish of the evening, Mick McMahon had a lead of several metres over Peter Bissett at the bell and looked well clear but Peter drove all the way down the home straight closing and in the end it was almost the proverbial photo finish – 1st Mick McMahon (4.38.15), 2nd Peter Bissett (4.38.40) with James Dunne taking 3rd (4.41.63).

As always a huge thank you to the club members who officiated tonight without whom these races would not happen.

We now take a short break on the championship front until Tuesday, June 11 when we will have the club 400 and club 5000 Championships.
