The pacemaker when through the mile in4:04 with the pack some way back, with four laps to go the race was being led by Geneti and Alistair Cragg, Cragg held back saying afterwards “I wanted to wait until the last lap”, with two laps to go Cragg held the lead however at the bell Bekele hit the front with Mottram and another Ethiopian Sileshi Sihine surging forward to take the lead with Mottram on his shoulder. On the final bend Mottram took the lead to win in a time of 8:24.54 with Sihine holding 2nd in 8:27.03 and Cragg 3rd in 8:27.39, a personal best.
