Cragg set to go

Aug 14, 2008 [Noel Guiden] Clonliffe`s Alistair Cragg hits the Bird`s Nest track in Beijing for the first time, in this his second Olympic Games, tomorrow in heat 2 of the 1500m due off at 12.10pm Irish time. Cragg of course is doubling up with the 1500/5,000, however, the indications are that he is very much focused on the longer event and is using the 1500 essencially as part of his preparations for Wednesdays 5,000. He faces a real fight getting out of tomorrow`s heats, as he finds himself up again 1500m athletes of the standard of Bernard Lagat (USA) the current World Champion, Asbel Kiprop (Kenya) a young man who has a current seasons best of 3.31.64 and Juan Carlos Higuero(ESP) with a 3.32.57 seasons best. Although Cragg has ran sparingly over the distance this season, his best 1500 in 2008 is 3.39.12, he does have a PB of 3.36.18. He will have to run close to that to come through the heats with the first 5 to qualify from the 4 heats plus the 4 fastest loosers.Alistair Cragg has the talent and the heart to do it.
