Darren Reilly 1st across line in McDonald Cup Grand Prix

Round 2 of the Grand Prix Series the McDonald Cup, sponsored by Trevor Wisdom,  took place in the Morton Stadium on Thursday night. Another excellent turn out, following on the great success of the record breaking round 1 the Frank White Cup two weeks earlier, with over 60 athletes lining up for the 4 mile race.

There was a titanic battle up front all night between Sean Doran, Darren Reilly and Tom Sherlock as this trio broke away from the pack. At the end of the 16 plus lap race a mere second separated the first two, as Darren Reilly in his comeback season proved the stronger winning in 21.34 from Sean Doran 2nd (21.35) and Tom Sherlock slipping off slightly 3rd in 21.43. Fastest of the women was Emma dunne (27.31), 2nd Aimee Ahern (27.39), 3rd Aideen O`Connor (27.49).

The result of the handicap for the McDonald Cup and Grand Prix points will be announced at the next race the 3,000m on April 28th.

On Thursday post race the prize giving for the Frank White 5 Mile, sponsored by Colm Doran, also took place with top points going to Trevor Wisdom, 2nd Philip Matthews, 3rd Declan Murray. Fastest Grand Prix was Darren Reilly, fastest woman Aisling Andrews.
