Darren Reilly wins Club 5k Championship

The 5k club championships incorporating the tenth race in the 2013 Grand Prix series took place last night on the track. A total of 31 athletes including a few guests toed the line in reasonably good conditions for running.

Johnny Bradley Ward hit the front from the off with a chasing pack of Darren Reilly, Tom Sherlock, Ronan Hartnett, Ernie Ramsey and Dermot Kelly in pursuit. After the first kilometre which was covered in 3.10, Johnny and Darren had opened a sizeable gap on the field. Eventually Darren Reilly pulled away and won comfortably in 16.32, with Tom Sherlock finishing second and a fast finishing Johnny to nick third spot from Ernie Ramsey.  There were a number of good battles going on throughout the field with Trevor Wisdom earning the bragging rights over his sister Rachel, outsprinting her in the last 80 metres. Alan Smeaton finished just ahead of Fergus Wheatley in a sprint finish and John Langan doing the same to Richard Connolly.

The winner in the handicap in the Grand Prix series was Fergus Wheatley, with Desie Shorten second and in third place Tom Sherlock.  Thanks to the officials on the night, in particular a superb job by Conor Keane on the lap counter and the bell. Thanks also to Caroline for the post race tea/coffee and buscuits.

The Grand prix is finished now until September, though Maurice Ahern has his 4 races in the annual August series on the track which are open to club members and members of the Grand prix. The first of these 4 races is the 1500m, next Thursday at 8.00.
