A most successful morning in Dublin’s Phoenix Park for today’s National 5k Road Championships for the Clonliffe contingent. As expected prerace favourite Efrem Gidey was a class apart running a superb time of 13.51, some going for that particular course, 40+ seconds clear of second-place finisoher Peter Somba (Dunboyne) to claim his 1st national senior title. Sean O’Leary had a solid run finishing 4th in 14.49, Sean was actually 3rd in the championship winning national bronze. The men’s team was completed by Darren O’Dwyer, who was 1st junior, 11 place in a time of 15.53 with Cathal McHale 13th in 16.05. These four were convincing winners of the team title on 29 points well clear of Crusaders and Rathfarnham.
The women’s team won national team silver led home by Laura Tuite, 6 woman (18.29), Alannah Cooley 12th (19.03) and Meghan O’Keeffe 17th (19.26). The team total was 35 points, only 3 points off gold which was taken by Brothers Pearse on 32 points with Rathfarnham 3rd on 49 points.
On the Masters front the Clonliffe M35 team took M35 gold – Thomas Sherlock, 15th (16.07), Declan Power 24th (16.26) and Niall Sherlock 46th (17.22) with 82 points from Donore and Sli Cualann.
Individually in the Masters Cathal McHale was 3rd M 35, Declan Power was 1st M 50. In the juniors as noted above Darren O’Dwyer was 1st junior man and Orla O’Sullivan was 3rd junior woman.
