The Clonliffe senior men’s cross country team travel to Spain on February 3 for the European Clubs Cross Country Championships which take place on 5 February at Orpoesa del Mar, near Castellon.
The squad selected to travel is: Stephen Cashin, Efrem Gidey, Ian Guiden, Sean O’Leary, Jayme Rossiter.
The rules of the competition have changed in recent years and there are now two clubs invited to participate from each Federation, the national champions and the runner up. Each team can run a maximum of 4 athletes with 3 to score. The senior men’s race will be held over a race distance of 8720m and on paper it looks like an interesting course which features several trips to the beach and a turn described as the ‘death turn’.
There are a total of 28 clubs entered from all over Europe with the Spanish and Portuguese teams being particularly strong, indeed defending champions Playas de Castellon might well start as favourites.
