Jul 16, 2011 [] With a new Personal Best time of 46.12 seconds, and new Clonliffe Club Record, Brian Gregan won the silver medal at the European Under 23 Championships this afternoon in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Interviewed straight after the race Brian had the following to say: “Two years ago I had a bad injury, I´ve gone through hell to get back here. The track was great. It was a bit windy, but I trained in windy conditions, so this was my strenght. This medal means everything to me, my family, coach, girlfriend.”
Brian was just .02 of a second outside of the Gold medal, won by Britain’s Nigel Levine. Always running at the front of the race Brian came in to the homestraight in line with the British athletes. Though it looked like he was fading, another kick with 50m to go brought him back level with Levine and within sight of the gold medal. Levine edged ahead and just held on at the tape for the gold.
This fantastic run gives Clonliffe Harriers it’s first ever medal winner from these European U23 Championships so congratulations to both Brian and his coach John Shields.
