The North and West Leinsters took place in fantastic weather last week, however, today in the Morton Stadium it was the turn of the East Leinster, and the weather took a serious turn for the worst. Cold and dark and then for good measure the heavens opened with heavy hail showers and a howling wind…perfect for track & field!!
Day 1: Only a few Harriers were in action. Both Amy Connolly and Kate Howlett made it through their heat in the Inter 300 and then took to the track for their final some 15 minutes later and just at the starter`s whistle the rain lashed down. Amy Connolly finishing like a train made up 2 places over the final 80m to place 4th, missing 3rd by inches, Kate was a little off the pace, not enjoying the conditions and placed 7th.
Stephanie McCaul, hampered by injury in her senior 400 placed 3rd.
Also spotted flying down the track in the junior 100 was Ella Brown, qualifying for the final and placing maybe 2nd in the final (TBC).
Paul Courtney (above) was in action in the senior 2,000 sc, he took the race by the scruff of the neck to take a fine win, possibly his first school`s victory.
A fine run also by young Ian McElweeny to take 2nd place in the minor boys 1,100 from a very big field.
Day 2 of the EastsĀ and a more pleasent day altogether. There was a nice Clonliffe long jump double with Amy Connolly winning the girls U/16 and Megan Coomber winning the senior girls title. Ella Brown was in more familiar territory today running over 800 where she placed 2nd in the minor girls. (please text missing results: name, event and place to 0879599888)
