Jan 13, 2008 [Noel Guiden] All three of our athletes had good runs in the Celtic Cross Country International held in conjunction with the Great Edinburgh Cross Country yesterday. Both Frances NicReamoin and Becky Woods were scorers on the Irish U/23 womens team that took victory, while Dave Flynn scored on the mens U/20 team that finish 2nd to Scotland.Frances placed 32nd overall and was Ireland`s second scorer in the U/23 in a time of 22:24. Becky was 56th overall in 23:58 and was Ireland`s 4th U/23 scorer. Dave Flynn placed 58th overall and was 3rd scorer on the Irish U/20 squad.
The race was a dress rehersal for the World Cross Country, now only two and a half months away, being run over the same Hollyrood course. The men`s race was an excellent race with a super finish from Kenenisa Bekele making the break at the summit of the final hill on the course some 600m from home to storm home making it three in a row from reigning World Cross Country Champion Zersenay Tadesse in second. After the race Bekele, who was expected to try regain his World Cross title on March 31st dropped a bomb shell stating ” it`s a fabulous place but I`m not sure I`ll be coming back for the World Cross Country. I`ll see what my condition is after the World Indoors”.
Winner of the women`s race was Gelete Burka in 19:58.
