Clonliffe`s Brian Gregan has just finished in 6th place in the European 400m Championship in Helsinki. After two blistering runs in two days, a PB and Olympic B standard of 45.63 on Wendesday, followed by a career 2nd best run of 45.76 in yesterday`s semi it was always going to be difficult to replicate that speed today. Gregan did as we all knew he would give it his best. His cause wasn`t helped when the athlete in the lane next pulled up at the start leaving Gregan chasing a bigger stagger in lane 7 and with Pavel Maslak (CZE) on his inside flying he was really up against it. As he hit the straight at 300 the European U/23 silver medalist was in bronze a position, he held out until the races in his legs caught up and as he tied up he was run out of that medal to finish 6th in 46.04. It was a very brave effort by the big man and a wonderful championship by him. Well done Brian!
Next up in Mark Kenneally in tomorrow`s 10,000 with Brian hopefully recovered for the 4 X 400.
