Into the West

Shane Rooney reports: As the country continued to soak up the sun, it was off to the west for several our running buddies.

First up was the Roscommon 10 Mile, which was is part of the Kia Race Series where David Mullen ran a fantastic time of 61.47. A big cheer for Mellissa ‘Honey C’ Curran, who crossed the line in a time of 1:27:44.

Moving further west, and while Sam may not be going to Mayo this year, Clonliffe Harriers were happy to bring their winning ways to the very scenic Achill Island.  The Achill Half Marathon, despite the hills, has become one of the must do races in racing calendar.  Gary O’Hanlon led the athletes home in a time of 70mins 45sec.  Motivated by Gary’s pace, the Andrews-Dowling’s, who were celebrating their 2nd wedding anniversary, went into the race with the goal of running side by side and to enjoy all the sights the course offers. However, as the Dynamic Duo passed the 5-mile point, they were informed that Aisling was in the prizes.  It was over to Marky Mark to come up with a game plan and he expertly pace Aisling for the remaining 8 miles.  The couple took to the hills like mountain goats and the crowd cheered Aisling across the line as 2nd lady home in a new PB time of 1:34:30. To quote Aisling “Mark comes in handy and thank God I got my hair done for the photos”.  The happy couple, who are always on hand to motivate everyone to achieve their personal best, were delighted to cheer home Caroline ‘Visor Model’ Hynes (2:03:33) and Katie ‘Golden Boot’ Hennigan (2:04:54) as both ladies crossed the finish line smiling as always.

Don’t forget, the 2018 Clonolympics takes place on the 10th August. Check out the poster and entry form which are on the notice board in the club entrance.

Congratulations to everyone who ran this week and keep digging in.
