Joe Fowler wins the Byrne Cup Grand Prix 1500m

On Thursday evening May 23rd  2024 the fourth Grand Prix event, the Byrne Cup 1500m,  was held in Morton Stadium, Santry. A total of 51 athletes competed in four 1500m races. Each race provided plenty of excitement for the many spectators in the Stadium. The full race results are attached to this report. 

Race 1: In the first race of the night both Sean Doran and Anthony Doran took an early lead. With two laps to go Sean pulled away to come home in a time of 4.23 followed by Anthony Doran in 4.33. In third place was Niall Sherlock in 4.35. 

Race 2: Nine athletes competed in this race. Aisling Andrews and Catherine Harvey battled for first place throughout this race. However coming into the finishing straight Aisling held on despite a strong challenge from Catherine. Aisling’s winning time was 5.24, Catherine followed closely in 5.25 with Ger Walsh in third in 5.26 

Race 3: This race provided another exciting finish between Carl Fleming and Joe Fowler. Coming into the straight Carl held a slight lead. However Joe accelerated over the last 70 meters to hold off a strong challenge from Carl.  Joe’s winning time was 5.37 with Carl 5.38. David Doran was third in 5.44. 

Race 4: This was the final race of the night with 12 runners. Aimee Ahern took an early lead. However, the final battle for first place was between Ann Lyons and Dave Reilly. In a most exciting finish Dave Reilly got over the line first in 6.12. Ann Lyons was in second in 6.13 with Aimee Ahern coming home  third place in 6.24.  

Grand Prix Result: The  top three runners in last night’s Grand Prix 1500m all came from Race 3. Joe Fowler ‘s performance on the night resulted in him getting first place. No doubt his fan club in the stands gave him all the vocal encouragement to claim first prize. Second place went to Carl Fleming. Eimear Griffin was in third.   Congratulations to all three. Prizes will be presented at the next race. 

A big thank you to all those who assisted with last night’s races. Peter McDermott got each of the races underway on time. Dan Lacey provided welcome refreshments in the Clubhouse after the race. 

Next Grand Prix Race: The next race will be the O’Connor Cup 4 Mile. This race is run on grass. This is scheduled to take place in Trinity Sports Ground, Santry Avenue on Thursday evening the 6 June 2024 at 8pm
