Stephen Bateson reports: A great haul of medals for Clonliffe athletes in the Leinster Track & Field Championship held in the impressive facilities at SETU in Carlow over the weekend.
On Day 1 there were Golds for Simon Galligan in the Hammer, a clear Winner with a throw of 60.09 m, also gold for Niall Allen in the Master Shot with a throw of 11.47 m.
Continuing the success in the field events, National Women’s Javelin Champion, Grace Casey secured Leinster Gold with a throw of 38.92m.
David Donegan won the Masters Men category of the Pole Vault with a height of 3:00m
In the Senior Men’s 100 m Pierce Friel and Michael Deady finished 1st and 2nd in Heat1 with times of 11:03 and 11:21resepectively. In the final Pierce finished in 6th with a time of 11:16 while unfortunately Michael was a DNS.
Jean Fearon was 3rd in the W45 category of the 100m with a time of 13:53.
Darry Piggott was 5th in the Men M55 category of the 100 m in a time of 13:57.
On Day 2 the highlight was an impressive debut win for Abdirahman Ali Maow in the U20 3000m in a time of 8:58:21. Abdi controlled the race from the start and ran consistent laps to increase his lead over the field. He finished strongly with a 66 sec final lap.
There were wins in her Category for Edel Maguire in the 200 m in a time of 30:30 and high jump with an effort of 1:35 m.
The ever present Niall Sherlock was very satisfied with his 3rd position in the race and 1st position in his category in the 800m in a time of 2:11:77.
