Today`s first round of the Indoor league in Athlone saw a dominant performance by the Clonliffe men topping the standings on 56 points from GCH on 39. This huge margin came as a result of 3 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third in the six events. Into the bargain two new club indoor records were set: Marius Containsius in the shot (15.88m) and Niall Counihan in the long jump (6.78m).
Wins came today from Marius in the shot, and then a double from Rolus Olusa: 60H in 8.72 and pole vault with a 3.60m best. In the long jump Niall Counihan was 2nd, likewise Keith Pike was 2nd in the 60m in 7.10 and Mark McDonald picked up 3rd in the 800 in 2.01.61. Guesting in the 60m Chris Sibanda was 1st in race 1 in 6.96 and Leo Morgan 1st in race 2 in 7.07. As if not busy enough Rolus also took in the 60m guest race recording a time of 7.24!
The women`s team were very light on the ground with four events only covered. Snezana Bechtina doubled up finishing 5th in the long jump (4.69) and 7th in the 60H (11.22). Ciara McCallion came down big time in distance finishing 7th in the 60m (7.99) and Emer Treacy also made a very valuable contribution 5th in the 800m (no times). The women ended the day in 7th on the table.
