Jul 18, 2010 [Noel Guiden] Round 2 of the National league took place in the Morton Stadium today, while the rain generally held off except for the 1500s the blustery wind was there for the day blowing hard into the athletes faces on the home straight making things difficult all round. Despite the team missing a fair few expierenced men Joe Cooper had the squad well fired up and at the close of the day the men topped the standings qualifing for the league final on August 14th.
As in round 1 in Antrim the foundations for today`s win lay squarely with the field eventers who once again delivered the goods. Maximun points were gathered in the throws, Tomas Rauktys winning the discus, Luke Mangan the shot and Martin Hunt the hammer. Dave Donegan was again supreme in the pole vault, taking the win, good also to see Anthony McCreery, guesting in that competition, starting to put a few good vaults together. Marcin Klinzow was 3rd in the high jump, 3rd also for Tomas Dorina in the triple jump.
On the track there were wins in both hurdle events by John Fagan in the 400h and Matthew Fields in the 110h. Good points also scored by Dave Flynn 2nd in the 3,000sc, after his 5 mile gallop around the Phoenix Park yesterday, and by Dave Fitzmaurice also 2nd in the 1500m. Danny Kavanagh had an excellent 100m also finishing 2nd.
Points also chipped in by Brett Paine 4th in the 800m, Declan Moran in the walk, 4th, John Laffey 3rd in the 200m after a problem in the 400m resulted in a DQ.
At the end of the day, the Clonliffe men where top once again, a job well done by all and another final to look forward to in Tullamore in 4 weeks time. Full official results soon on www.athleticsireland.ie.
