The countdown to July 2 is well and truly on. Today there are 100 days to go until Morton Games returns. After the cancellation due to Covid 19 of the 2020 and 2021 meets we are looking forward with great excitement to the return of top-class athletics to Santry and Dublin.
Preparations for the meet are well underway. The meet director has reported on an excellent response from Ireland’s top athletes all of whom are eager to perform once again in an international meet on Irish soil. This year’s meet will take place on a Saturday evening and it is expected that this will draw the crowds to Santry for a night of non-stop action. Morton Games over the course of a 90 minute international programme will pack in 12 international events featuring the cream of Irish and international athletes concluding at 9 PM with the iconic Morton Mile. The Morton mile has been the most prolific producer of the magical sub- four, to date in 36 runnings of the Morton Mile there have been 149 sub fours recorded. This means that the winner of this year’s mile will become the 150th.
2022 will also see the return of the women’s international mile and the return after a number of years absence of the women’s 400. The other favourites are all there including 100 sprints, the always outstanding 800s, for the field event fans the women’s high jump and men’s javelin and of course the distance race on the night the Albie Thomas Memorial 5000. More news will follow as we move, swiftly no doubt, through these next 100 days. In the meantime mark it in your diary – Saturday Night Fever at Morton Games, July 2.
