National 5k Gold for men, Bronze for women (plus roads round up)

It was another successful outing for Clonliffe Harriers at this morning’s national 5K Road championships in the Phoenix Park. Although weather conditions were perfect for running the Park 5k course is a tough one featuring the long hill at around 3.5K.

There was a particular strong men’s team who well justified their favourites tag taking a comfortable win with a combined time of 59.49 well clear of Letterkenny AC 61.25 with Galway City Harriers 3rd. The men’s team was led home in 2nd place by Colm Rooney clocking a time of 14.34, in 5th place was Ian Guiden 14.52, Stephen Cashin 9th 15.02 and Mahad Egaal 13th 15.22. The men successfully retained the National team title.

There was an equally fine performance by the women’s team, despite missing a couple of athletes, the team was led home by Niamh Kelly stepping up considerably in distance from the 800 she ran in Belfast this day last week, Niamh finished 12th woman in a chip time of 18.05, next in was Meghan O’Keeffe 25th, in a new PB of 18.50 and Clodagh Galvin 6th 18.54, with 3 to count in the women’s race the team had a combined score time of 56.12, only 7 seconds off silver.

There was a fantastic turnout of Clonliffe athletes with over 30 competing. Results:
