The National senior Track and Field championships for the 149th successive year got underway at Wintry Morton Stadium tonight. Simon Galligan in the throws cage, unfortunately outside the main arena, took Clonliffe’s first medal of the championships, in the hammer. After a tentative opening throw of 56.24 Simon got into the groove hitting 58.37, 59.47, 57.99, 59.38 and finishing with his best of the evening 59.74 to secure bronze repeating his 2020 national.
In the 1500 heats Cathal Doyle qualified comfortably for tomorrow’s final (5.20pm) placing 2nd in his heat in 3.55.94. Richie Owens was 6th in 3.58.57 and Mark McDonald was 8th (4.04.39) both drawn in the same heat. European Para T13 1500 champion Greta Streimyte also progressed to tomorrow’s 1500 final qualifying as a result of a 4.40.52. Tom Pitkin was in action in the 400 heats winning heat 6 in 48.18 and goes in lane 7 in tomorrow’s final at 4.55pm.
Also tonight the st. Cocas AC 5k road race took place in Co. Kildare where sean Doran was 12th in 15.18.
