Jan 23, 2011 [Noel Guiden] Clonliffe super vet Philip O`Doherty took both 400m and 800m gold in the O/50 at the National Masters Indoor Championships in Nenagh today. First off he took gold in the O/50 400m in a time of 64.07, however, this was only an appetizer for the thriller served up as the main course later in the afternoon. In the race of the day over the tight Nenagh track O`Doherty had a titanic battle with West Waterford`s Joe Gough (O/55) for victory with no quater asked or given. As they took the bell for the final 200 circuit the Clonliffe man lead only for Gough to brush past him and take the lead, all seemed lost, however, O`Doherty gathered himself for the final battle surging as they came off the final bend to hit the front and take a famous victory in a time of 2.13.5.
To complete a great day George Maybury also served up a double medal winning performance in the same events this time in the O/55 category. Bronze in the 400m (71.56) followed by 800m silver in 2.32.32. Great stuff from both of these guys.
