Mick Kearney: Last evening, Thursday 25 July 2024, the Mick Murphy 5 Mile took place in Malahide. In Ideal weather conditions 53 runners completed this year’s race. This race incorporates the Malahide Classic which has been held for the last 45 years (1980 – 2024). The first winner of this 5 mile race was Michael Murphy in 24.02. Michael tragically died in a road accident in the early 1980’s and the race was named in his honour with his family providing a memorial cup.
This year marked the 43rd running of the Michael Murphy Memorial Race (1982-2024). The race comprised of two equal laps and was run as an Open handicap with staggered start times for all athletes taking part.
The organisers were delighted with the turnout. Martin Tracey did the lead bike on the night. It proved a most exciting race. At the end of the first lap Anthony O Brien was in the lead followed by Ciara Faherty and Darren Horgan. However, the lead changed over the next lap and first home was Philip Matthews followed by Clodagh Moriarty with Anthony O’Brien taking third place. Stephen Harkness was the fastest man in 29:41 with Catherine Harvey the fastest lady in a time of 35:15.
The post-race prize giving took place in Malahide Cricket Club. Tony Brady of Malahide Cricket Club extended a warm welcome to Clonliffe Harriers. This was the 41st year that this wonderful venue has been used for the race presentation. Philip, Clodagh and Anthony were presented with their prizes by Liam Hennessy. Congratulations to all three.
