Sergiu Ciobanu had another excellent run on the streets of Dublin for today`s marathon as he regained the National Marathon title in a time of 2.17.38, to win the National for a 4th time. The Dublin Marathon took place in ideal conditions, a wind free, calm warm Autumn morning. Gary O`Hanlon was 4th in the Nationals, having been caught for 3rd place over the closing miles, Gary ran a time of 2.22.50. Needless to say Gary`s race was not without drama, his Facebook posting tells the story: “After a nasty fall clipping a kerb at mile 4 I ruptured tendons and ligaments and waiting on a xray for a suspect broken ankle.Foot was so swollen the medical team struggled to remove my running shoe.I have a pretty high pain threshold but my limits were tested today running on one leg for the remaining 22 miles.I don’t know it was stubborness or stupidity but i I didn’t train this hard for today to quit.”
The 3rd Clonliffe man was David Mansfield with a 3 min, 10 second pb of 2.27.32. With Clonliffe filling 1st, 4th and 5th places in the National race, the men took the team title. The womensteam of Aisling Andrews (3.25.57, Aideen Brady 3.42.24 and Alison O`Sullivan 3.44.46) placed 18th.
Post race Sergiu said: “I’m relieved. I really wanted to win the national title. That’s my best Dublin marathon by two mins. My previous best was 2:19.”
Although Sergiu was just outside the World Championships qualifying time he’s looking forward to the future and pulling on the green vest once more.
“I know I missed the world qualification standard of 2:17 but we’ll see. I’ve represented Ireland three times in the last ten months. I really look forward to working with Athletics Ireland and to represent Ireland in the future. I just love to run.”
