May 5, 2008 [Jeremy Walsh] The 117th Clonliffe 2 mile road race was run today in magnificent sunshine. 84 athletes toed the line at the Bottom of the Hill pub in Finglas and made their way downhill for the fast first mile. The front runners appeared to be holding back a little and the real race didn’t start until the uphill section. By the time they got to the last corner before the turn in to the finish line at the Gravediggers pub in Glasnevin, there was not much to seperate the front four. David Flynn, leading junior struggled to stay with the senior pace and Tom Fitzpatrick from Tallaght was next to be dropped. With 200m to go Rory McDonnell of Dunboyne made his move, but Paul Fleming (Rathfarnham) tracked him all the way, and a titanic battle ensued. In the end Paul’s renowned sprint finish saw him take victory in 9.36, with Rory just a second behind.
Annette Kealy was first female home, while Liffey Valley won the Men’s team prize by a single point from Dunboyne. In the Ladies team even, Sportsworld and Clonliffe both scored 110 points, but Sportsworld took 1st place on countback. David Flynn and Kate Purcell from the hosting club were Junior winners on the day. Full results below.
