Finally some good news! Athletics Ireland tonight announced that an Elite only Micro Indoor Meet has been sanctioned and will take place at the NIA on the 20th and 21st of this month. The meet, which replaces the cancelled National Indoors, will give the country’s elite athletes the opportunity to qualify for the next month’s European Indoor Championships in Poland, and will also carry World ranking points, vital for any Olympic hopeful. In tonight’s release Athletics Ireland says: “Entry will be restricted to athletes tracking towards Olympic Games qualification and European Indoor Championships qualification, including senior relay panels, and invitations will be issued in the coming days.
A small number of additional athletes may be invited to ensure the event is compliant with permitting requirements so that all results are valid for qualification purposes. The participation of each athlete must be approved by Government via Sport Ireland Expert Group.”
Athletics Ireland are to be commended for their work and efforts in securing permission for this event during these challenging times.
