With the League cross country having kicked off the season for clubs on Sunday the schools followed suit yesterday with the Belvedere Cross Country Relays in the Phoenix Park. The course used was the usual open lap at the Papal Cross. It was a true cross country day, cold and wet, wet, wet, as always in the Park, however, the ground was hard, making for fast racing despite the conditions. Most of the schools were using the event as a shake down with athletes only back in training after the Summer break. The formate of the event featured 1k, 2k and 3k legs with schools entering as many teams as they like.
The St. Aidans lads had a most successful day bring back to Whitehall several impressive looking trophies. Excellent form in particualar shown by the all Clonliffe inter team of Sean Carrigg, Kevin McKenna, Shane Merrigan, Greg Hossenny and Joseph Hession as they recorded a fine win, with the inter C team, also showing an almost full Clonliffe compilment of Brain Flanagan, Cathal Doyle, Alex Gibbons, David O’ Hanlon and (time for a come back to the fold) Philip Keenan placing 3rd. The senior A`s featuring Niall Norman and Liam Ashton were 1st.
Positive run`s were also recorded in the Belvedere colours by Clonliffe athletes Kevin Loftus in the inter section and Ben Guiden in the minors.
Well done all. Next up on the schools calender is the Brother at Your Side Clonliffe Schools Invitational in Santry on October 9th.
