Oct 16, 2009 [Noel Guiden ] The Brother at your side Clonliffe Schools X.C. took place in wonderful autumnal sunshine this afternoon at Santry Demesne. The event proved to be an outstanding success with an estimated 900 children taking part. The event was most generously sponsored by Brother Ireland. Clonliffe had provided an excellent 1k loop of Santry Demesne parkland finishing down the avenue of trees which will be the finish for the European Cross Country on December 13th.
The first race of the day had a huge field in the girls primary schools race over 600 metres many of these youngsters enjoying their first athletics race. First was Sarah Traynor of Vincent de Paul who led home her school to an outstanding victory with runners placed 1, 6, 8 and 9. There was approximately 150 plus youngsters in that race. The primary school boys race attracted almost as big a field; the winner from St. Fiachras was Garreth Hogan and with St. Fiachras having runners placing 1, 3, 4 and 6 they took team honours.
At 1.30 the secondary school program got underway. There were extremely keenly contested races throughout. The minor girls race was won in fine style by Rachel Murray. The minor boys winner was Patrick Elliot. Colaiste Iosagain took team honours in the minor girls race and Colaiste Eoin took team honours in the minor boys.
The Junior boys race was won following an excellent team performance by St. Aidan’s led home by Liam Ashton in second place.
There was another fine race at intermediate level and after a great battle up front Kevin Dooney of CBS Monkstown took a well deserved win from St. Aidan’s Conor Turner.
The intermediate girls race was not as well supported, however, was won in fine style by Siofra Cleirigh Buttner from Ciara Hewson.
The days final race saw a very strong performance from Jayme Rossiter of Belvedere leading home St. Paul’s Donal Foley with Mark McKenzie of St. Aidan’s in third place.
Presentation to the winners was made by Mr. Sean Sheehan M.D. of Brother and international athlete and Clonliffe Harrier Mark Kenneally. Also in attendance on the day were Mr. Liam Hennessy, President of Athletics Ireland and Mr. John Foley CEO Athletics Ireland.
The best overall school after a very tightly fought affair was St. Aidan’s of Whitehall courtesy of three team first places with Colaiste Iosagain second with two first teams and one second.
Clonliffe Harriers wish to sincerely thank our sponsors Brother, all who turned out to help on the day and the schools and their teachers for taking part.
