Young Clonliffe athletes do their stuff in Irishtown

A small but select Clonliffe crew went to Irishtown for the final round of the Dublin Juvenile track and field league today. Once again the group did the business with top drawer performances and a number of wins thrown in for good measure. First Harrier in action was Kate Hession running in her first ever 400 in the U/16 girls and a pretty good first run over the distance it was too, 5th place in a pacey 71 seconds. Of the other Clonliffe girls Alannah Cooley as always gave it her all running a fine race in the U/15 1500m 6th in 5:31. The season long U/16 Laura/Sally  battle resumed today. Over 1500m the girls were together in a tatical race, with 400 to go Laura tuite wound up the pace at the front with what looked like a winnning move, Sally Aherne stuck to her task and in a neck and neck dive for the line Laura held on, a winning margin of less than an inch, both girls recording times of 5:37.

The Clonliffe boys squad also competed very well. Paddy O`Hanlon ran an excellent U/15 400 to finish second in 58.9 and then jump 5.o4m to win the long jump. A win also by Joseph Hession in the U/14 1500 (5:02), althought second on the road the winner was guesting, Joseph making up maybe 25 meters on the last lap as he moved through the field from 5th place at the bell. A good run also over 1500 by Sean Carrig, Sean placing 2nd in the U/15 race running 4:51. Cathal Doyle also had a good run 2nd in the U/16 in 4:40.3.

That brings the curtin down on the League for another year. Next up the Dublin Championships on the weekend of June 8th/10th, with the Africia Week Sports next Saturday as a possibility.
