Updated: Congratulations to Brian Gregan who lead the Irish team of Craig Lynch, David Gillick and Thomas Barr to the European 4 x 400 final. In Saturday`s`s heats the team finished 4th and progressed into tomorrow`s final as one of the fastest losers.
Gregan got the team off to a good start with 46.4 split before passing on to Lynch who clocked 45.9. He handed to Gillick who ran 46.01 diving across the line passing to 400 hurler Barr who anchored the team with 46.04.
They were hoping for a time of 3:04.25 or better to get back into the top 16 for the Olympics in Rio and although short of this will have a final do or die opportunity at 6.50pm tomorrow. The target time is 3.04.05.
Ciara McCallion was also in relay action on Saturday running the final leg as the team recorded a season`s best of 3:34.02 to finish 8th in heat 2.
Sunday: The 4 X 400 team, again, lead out by Brian Gregan put in a spirited display as they chased that Rio spot, along they finished outside of the desired time, an excellent 5th place was the result in 3.04.32.
Earlier this morning Sergiu Ciobanu finished the Half Marathon in 67.46 as the Irish team placed 7th overall.
