No.38: 60 Seconds with Harrier Mo McCrohan

Followers of this web site will be well aware of the exploits of Mo McCrohan with his reports on races far and wide so it’s great to have Maurice as this morning’s 60 second victim!

What age did you take up the sport of athletics and why? Mid 20s .To gets rid of a growing stomach on an otherwise thin frame.

When and why did you join Clonliffe Harriers? October 2004, Following yet another 3.02 marathon. 12 months later, I cracked the sub 3!

What is your favourite training workout? Thursday night 10 mile road run (though that seems to fading away now?)

And you’re least favourite? 400m intervals. Too quick for me!

What’s your favourite race / athletics meet? Any Marathon! What is your most cherished or proudest moment in athletics? (as athlete and/or coach) 3rd place in Connemara marathon 2006.

What was your worst injury – and how did you get over it? My running partners say I don’t get injured? I did slip on the grass out in Santry Demesne one session and my lower back was sore. Rest, frustrating as it was. Worked!

(For a coach or seasoned athlete) What piece of advice would you give an aspiring athlete? Try not to overdo the first part of the training workout. I It’s ‘how you finish the session not how you start it that counts.

Do you have any memorable or funny story from Clonliffe Harriers that you could share? (the censorship board may review!) More observations than stories …Being told off about my running style on my very first session at the club…seeing new runners arrive with ill fitting shorts and dodgy runners, One in particular had his Dublin jersey on every session until it clicked and on came the singlet.. Runner’s fads…Dioralyte, Nesquik, weight training .stretching…!

How would your non-athlete friends describe you? (In 3 words) Loyal, determined, hard working

What are your next running / athletics goal? (Whenever normality returns!) Recovering from surgery (to running related) so any sort of running is my goal.

How are you motivating yourself to continue training at these difficult times? Do not want to pile on the pounds.
