Sheridan selected for European Throwing Cup

Clonliffe’s Eoin Sheridan has been selected for Ireland to compete in the senior discus competition at the European Throwing Cup on March 21st to 23rd in Leiria, Portugal.

Eoin Sheridan opens season with a Clonliffe record

Newly minted Clonliffe harriers, U/23 international Eoin Sheridan, threw a new Clonliffe club discus record in his first competition of the year, the Dunboyne Winter Throws in Morton Stadium on Sunday last, the 23rd. Sheridan threw a best of 55.05 to win. Simon Galligan also got his year underway placing 3rd in the hammer with a 55.38 throw.

Clonliffe throwers in record breaking form

As has being reported Rory Gunning broke the club record at the European Clubs with a throw of 62.36 mts, this was the second occasion that Rory has re written the record books.  In addition to the senior record going the junior record of Ryan Whelan’s was also broken by Justinas Gerdvilis ( Justin) in winning the event at the AAI Games in Santry on Sunday. He threw 53.89 mts breaking the record by 8cms after throwing and winning the Dublin Graded last Wednesday with 52.30.

On the subject of record breaking throws Jill Maloney has been confirmed as the club`s latest record breaker. Due to a technical problem her shot putt in the USA at the Kehoe Twilight Meet on May 5th of 11.02m  has only now been officially confirmed this smashes Jill`s own record by more than a meter.

Updated weekend Round up: New Club Javelin Record!

The weekend round up: Friday at the Navan 6k Conor Healy, after a 3rd place finish in the Clonliffe 2 on Tuesday, was 4th in 19.32. Also on Friday at the Big 10 Championships at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, USA Jill Maloney was 15th with a best in the javelin of 39.91m.

Further news from the US Aaron Hanlon was 8th in the 5000 for Providence recording a time of 14.49.08  in the Big East Championships held in Geneva, Ohio.

Saturday the Ton Le Gaoithe Meet at Waterford RTC where the big news was the record breaking performance of Rory Gunning in his first competition for Clonliffe in the javelin with a throw of 59.52m better the existing club record by more than a meter (Paul Marray 58.35 from 2008). Another athlete showing excellent early season form is Chris Sibanda who placed 2nd in the 100 in 10.69.

On Saturday night at the BMC Grand Prix, Sports City, Manchester Mark McDonald ran a season`s best of 1.56.74.

On Saturday at the North East Championships in England Liam Roarty was 10th in the 1500 (4.24.63) and on Sunday 7th in the 800 (2.06.57)

Sunday and Sean Doran was 2nd in the Mondello Half Marathon in 73.44 and at the Terenure 5 Mile also on Sunday Sergiu Ciobanu was 3rd in 24.16, 12th (1st O/45) Declan Power 26.29 and 52nd Matt McGuinness 29.29, a pb.


Simon Galligan 3rd at Spring Throws plus Jill Maloney in USA

At Saturday`s Athletics Ireland Spring Throes Meet held in the Morton Stadium Simon Galligan was 3rd in the hammer with a best throw of 57.57m. The club`s other competitor was Alan Gunning in the Javelin who placed 7th with a best of 42.96m.

In the USA javelin thrower Jill Maloney on Friday was 6th for Maryland at the Virginia Quad Meet in Charlottesville with a best of 33.38m and on Saturday was 2nd in the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational also in Charlottesville with a 36.36m effort, both competitions held in what was described as “brutal weather”.
